NCMA’s Newest Exhibition Portrays The Magnetism We Feel For Bodies Of Water Alongside The Dangers, Even The Terror, That Seas Often Present. This Exhibition Examines The Romantic Fascination Artists Have Always Had For Expanses Of Water Through American And European Artists Working In Many Styles From The Mid-19th Century To The Present. Organized By Director Emerita Constance Schwartz, The Sea Around Us Includes Works By Jasper F. Cropsey, William Glackens, Thomas Buttersworth, Childe Hassam, Red Grooms, Maurice Prendergast, Edward Hopper, Claude Monet, Louis Comfort Tiffany And N.C. And James Wyeth And Other Masters Of Seascape Art.

Currents Showcases Three Exciting Artists Working Today: Jessica Jackson Hutchins, Benjamin Edwards And Tom Sanford. All Three Artists Have Been Shown Widely In Group And Solo Exhibitions Here And Abroad. Hutchins’ Sculptural Work Was Seen In The 2010 Whitney Biennial. Benjamin Edwards Reflects Contemporary Society In Hallucinatory And Visionary Landscapes. Tom Sanford Paints Vibrant Representations Of Pop Objects And Celebrities. The Exhibition Is Organized By Elaine Berger For The Museum’s Contemporary Collectors Circle.

“For Us The Living” Portrays The Sights, Feelings And Drama Of The Civil War. Considered By Many To Be The Leading Contemporary Painter Of Civil War Scenes, Mort Künstler’s Work Is Esteemed For Its Dramatic Intensity And For An Extraordinary Level Of Authenticity That Results From Intensive Research. The Exhibition Consists Of Approximately 50 Paintings And A Selection Of Documentary Objects Including A First-Time-Ever Look Into Künstler’s Creative Process Through Sketches, Drawings, Preliminary Studies, Photographs And Props. Many Of The Paintings Are From Künstler’s Own Collection, Others Are From Various Private And Public Collections.

This Two-Person Exhibition Features Painter Keith Mayerson And Sculptor Kent Henrickson. Mayerson’s Paintings Have Been Described As Pop Culture Narratives, As Well As Contemporary Icons. Calling His Work Sensual And Earnest, The New York Sun Wrote, “Mr. Mayerson Manages To Create Surprise And Beautiful Translations Into Oil Paint.” His Work Has Been Seen In Solo And Group Shows Throughout The Country And Has Been Reviewed In Distinguished Periodicals. Kent Henrickson’s Glazed Porcelains, Some Featuring Text, Have Been Exhibited Internationally. He Said That He Strives To, “Create A Broader Dialogue By Focusing On The Interplay Between Both High And Low Culture.
